My research focuses on civic engagement for people who identify recent US policies and actions as threats to democratic norms.

Previous research tells us a lot about why people show up to do “the work” of democracy, who shows up, and what they do.

We have the opportunity now to learn about these concepts under additional social, cultural and political pressures. How do people learn the work of democracy? What sustains them? What are they preparing for, and how? How do their civic identities develop over time?

My current project is a 3-year qualitative study of a diverse panel of civically engaged Americans.
